I use food grade diatomaceous earth on my dog's bedding and furniture, and it really does kill fleas and mites. But you have to keep in mind that it can clog a vacuum if you suck up too much. But using a broom works great!
Fleas? Inexpensive, effective holistic option
This is the type of diatomaceous earth I use. I also use a powder duster like the one below, so make sure it spreads evenly (and is less messy, and I can use less).
I recently started using my own mixture of Oregano Oil combined with a carrier oil (currently using MCT oil), to help my dogs with their itching. I've also used olive oil and almond oil as a carrier but prefer the MCT because I heard coconut oil (which is what MCT oil is from) helps combat yeast infections.
I couldn't find any fleas on the dogs, even with a flea comb, but after I applied it I found a few fleas that were jumping off them. This stuff DRASTICALLY reduced their itching. The carvacrol in oregano oil apparently kills demodex mites, too.
From Google:
I refuse to use typical flea treatments like Advantage and Frontline, since I swear those toxic tropical treatments shortened the lives of all the cats I had over the last 2 decades. And I often wonder about the harms they could have been doing to every human in the same household, since those chemicals inevitably wind up all over the furniture and flooring! I usually used Advantage instead of Frontline, because when I tried Frontline on one of my cats, he had a terrible reaction, started panting, and when he died it was from Lymphoma. I couldn't help wondering if it was from the flea meds.
At the same I hate those topical flea meds, I only gave it to my cats because I just didn't know of anything that worked better, to keep them from scratching, than those nasty toxic remedies. I had to wonder what was worse: the constant itching, or dying from cancer! It was a bummer to think I had to choose between one of the two! Couldn't there be some natural solution out there, that actually worked???
I had tried using an herbal flea spray on my cats once, and I swear it made one of my cats develop serious kidney issues when she licked it all off her fur. So I pretty much avoided using essential oils on their fur, for fear this could happen again.
I got a lot better at flea combing the cats, and vacuuming. But I was still hoping to find some kind of essential oil that could actually be safe for pets.
What actually works for dogs, according to the reviews I've read:
I recently read something about cedarwood oil being a good flea repellent for dogs. I looked up this brand, but it can take weeks to arrive. Sadly, this other brand that can arrive tomorrow doesn't have reviews that are nearly as good for repelling fleas, so I guess I'm going to have to wait. At least I have my oregano oil treatment for now!
