- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2016My personal trainer actually told me about turkey tail , reishi, shitake, mitake, and chagas mushrooms the benefits and how to actually process them. My lab had just been diagnosed with 2 different cancers one of which is hemangiosarcoma. His liver enzymes were elevated. His spleen had numerous tumors and his liver also had tumors and irregularities. We decided that since he was so full of life and was currently not in pain we would have his spleen removed because that seems to kill a lot of dogs by causing the spleen to rupture and bleed to death. He was initially just suppose to have his anal glands removed because he had a small tumor on one of them and the vet recommended surgery. But before they were going to do that they did an ultrasound first and found the hemangiosarcoma. So after extensive research and I certainly don't have the time to pick mushrooms,and process them I found the 5 defenders product on Amazon and liked the fact that it is processed correctly! We immediately started Boomer on it as well as DenaMarin ( which is milk thistle and amino acids to support liver health) organic turmeric and coconut oil as well as krill oil. We are 3 months in and he had his first check up. The vet was very pleased his weight is good, his energy is excellent, his calcium levels are normal, his liver functions have come back down to near normal. Chest x-ray and ultrasound reveal now new tumors or free fluid in the abdomen, heart and lungs are clear! Come to find detailed out our vet had found out about turkey tail mushrooms and a study out of the University of Pennsylvania regarding exciting results in extending the lives of dogs with hemangiosarcoma! We gave him all of the info on this product and the study. Then come to find out one of the other vets we see in the practice had just come back from a veterinary conference regarding turkey tail mushrooms and cancer in dogs! We love this product! I too will be starting to take this product daily for my health on the advice of my trainer! Thank you for this phenomenal product! Fingers crossed we get another 3 months with our 12 yr old lab!

- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2019UPDATE: I give 5 Defenders Mushroom powder to my 12 year old Lab, Shadow, and am very happy with it, but have removed one star from my original review because the product forms hard, medium-to-large clumps in the container after about four or five months. (It is stored in a kitchen cabinet away from heat and light and has never gotten damp.) Some large clumps are so hard they must be broken with the back of a spoon since I cannot break them by hand. This is annoying, but I'm able to judge the size of the smaller clumps, rub one between my fingers and sprinkle approximately 1/4 tsp of powder over Shadow's food and mix it in. ORIGINAL POST: For the past three years I’ve been giving my 70# Lab mix a mushroom complex made for dogs because it can help fight and/or prevent cancer. Shadow still has had some tumor activity, but to date they have been benign. I am happy with this product and feel that it helping keep 12 year old Shadow feeling young, active and tumor free. Her pain was obvious. We had been told she probably had cancer, but we chose not to operate due to her age. After the first few days on 5 Defenders, there was an obvious difference. She is not only getting up and down, but she is going on her daily walks again, and even running when she's excited. Her groomer was so impressed with the improvement, that she inquired what had made the difference. Then hubby and I (both over 65) started taking them, and Wow! One can’t go to the grocery without seeing a Warning Prop 65 label as they have included almost everything under the Sun to be cancer causing. That being said, this product does have the label for apparently containing lead, which I believe should have been fully disclosed by Amazon in the description and pictures of the product. I would suggest reading the answer from the company regarding lead in the above Q & A on the product page to allay any concerns.

I say this because I have an autoimmune disorder(nephrotic syndrome-fsgs) and the long cycles of immunosuppressants was not working for me. I’ve purchased these mushrooms individually and performed double water/alcohol extractions making tinctures and made teas of them to get their beneficial components. My son and I were caring for him, under extreme stress. I knew I had to stay strong, couldn't afford to become ill or weak because he depended on me. (He died in July.) Yet, I've managed to get through the past five months as best as can be. I believe this powder helped to shore up my immune system, and kept me going when the going got very tough. I also use cream afterwards.... I love it and miss the taste (acquired) when I quit once and used the capsules. It is good! (when I first started I used flavored cream, now just plain) I am using to help fight and win my battle against cancer.

After getting advice from several vets, we settled on a treatment plan that includes amputation, chemotherapy, mushrooms, Simpson oil, turmeric, and fish oil. Three months later, he is doing great. He loves the flavor of the 5-Defenders powder mixed into a broth poured over his dinner. Quality product
I would say it's a quality product and that you can notice the benefits from. I've tried both the capsules and the bulk powder, between the two I'd recommend the capsules, even if adding the powder to food/drinks. The powder in capsules was easier to dissolve than the bulk and retains it's freshness better.
I've given the powder to both a cat and a dog with cancer and it's been well tolerated by each. Immunosuppressed person story
I love my Real Mushroom supplements. I couldn't say for sure that it works but, let me tell you why I rely on it. As a cancer patient with chemotherapy treatment every week for 6 months, I was pretty fragile to any viruses. But surprisigly, I havent been sick once during those 6 months of treatment. It is pretty uncommun.

So far very pleased, even amazed, time will tell. Our Border Collie 11 yrs old, very physically strong, active and very smart developed a tumor in his bladder likely cancerous and another tumor in his liver considered benign. Showing symptoms of disinterest, lethargy and lack of appetite was expected to go downhill fast. Put vet put him on a prescribed anti-inflammatory drug that truly helped. Then I did same research on mushrooms and discovered 5 Defenders. Impressed, we put him on one per day. BIG improvement ! Now increased to 2 capsules per day. Lethargy is gone and his intelligent brightness has returned. He's diving running for his frisbee and eating full meals again. In one month he's going uphill rather than downhill. Everyone should use this!
Bought mostly to use for fighting my dogs cancer, but my husband and I have started using it for preventative measures as well. It tastes almost like truffle chocolates in my coffee and completely tasteless in my smoothies. Glad we are using it, just wish it was a little bit more affordable. I can’t testify to the effects as we bought this for our dog at the advice of our Holistic Vet as a tool in our arsenal to deal with our dogs oral cancer. Not sure the time required to build up in the body for peak effectiveness. Big health benefit
5 defenders mushroom extract is a part of my daily regime for cancer prevention. I had a reacurrance of breast cancer after 10 years of remission, I wish I knew about the health benifets of mushroom extract then, maybe I would have had a reacurrance. It is expense but the little package lasts a long time, and it definitely helps the immune system. Terminal cancer support
I wish I could say that I was taking these myself but I actually got them for a foster dog (palliative care) that arrived with cancerous tumors. He was given a 0-2 months sentence by the vet he saw on Dec 6th. It is now Jan 12th and he seems to be in better condition that he was 5 weeks ago. The tumors are not disappearing but they don't seem to be growing either. The mushrooms are one of many supplements that I'm using on him to extend his life. He was neglected for 11 years and if he only gets a few good months at the end then all of the attempts to keep him comfortable are worth the cost. Because he's 1/2 the size/weight of a human he's currently only taking one per day. If there are any left over when he eventually passes, they won't go to waste.
Update - It is now Apr 12th and I've had to make another purchase because he's still ALIVE! I had every intention of pushing him past the vet's dismal expiry date (which would have been Feb 6th) but to see him now, well past that, and doing beautifully! Cancer warning
Was disappointed to find out that once I received the product, it included a proposition 65 sticker (the product could cause cancer and/or birth defects or other reproductive harm) which was not included in the web image. Very misleading. Will not be taking these.8 people found this helpful

This is annoying, but I'm able to judge the size of the smaller clumps, rub one between my fingers and sprinkle approximately 1/4 tsp of powder over Shadow's food and mix it in. ORIGINAL POST: For the past three years I’ve been giving my 70# Lab mix a mushroom complex made for dogs because it can help fight and/or prevent cancer. Shadow still has had some tumor activity, but to date they have been benign. I am happy with this product and feel that it helping keep 12 year old Shadow feeling young, active and tumor free. Once a day I mix 1/4 teaspoon of Five Defenders Mushroom Extract powder into Shadow’s breakfast and have been l delighted with the results...two small fatty tumors under his front legs have completely disappeared.

Update. So here are some details. Have been giving these 2x daily (pet vet direction) to 15 yr old cocker spaniel with inoperable tumor. Tumor considered inoperable after exploratory surgery 18 months ago found that more harm would come if tumor was removed. Have been giving the mushrooms 2X daily since then & while tumor is still present & growing, dog continues to do well!! Vet has multiple cases where these mushrooms have beefed up the immune system & enhanced body's ability to thrive.
Have now also started 7 year old pekingese on these for skin allergies & immediate improvement noted. The REAL benefit is that even though the allergies continue, are seasonal & minimized by other meds, the mushrooms help the inevitable surface sores heal MUCH faster.

I've been taking Reishi mushroom powder for about a year now, because I figured that it couldn't hurt to try and prevent any kind of diseases, due to the healing powers of triterpenoids in reishi mushroom spores. Mushroom Facts
So far very pleased, even amazed, time will tell. Our Border Collie 11 yrs old, very physically strong, active and very smart developed a tumor in his bladder likely cancerous and another tumor in his liver considered benign. Showing symptoms of disinterest, lethargy and lack of appetite was expected to go downhill fast. Put vet put him on a prescribed anti-inflammatory drug that truly helped. Then I did same research on mushrooms and discovered 5 Defenders. Impressed, we put him on one per day. BIG improvement ! Now increased to 2 capsules per day. Lethargy is gone and his intelligent brightness has returned. He's diving running for his frisbee and eating full meals again. In one month he's going uphill rather than downhill. Terminal cancer support
I wish I could say that I was taking these myself but I actually got them for a foster dog (palliative care) that arrived with cancerous tumors. He was given a 0-2 months sentence by the vet he saw on Dec 6th. It is now Jan 12th and he seems to be in better condition that he was 5 weeks ago. The tumors are not disappearing but they don't seem to be growing either. The mushrooms are one of many supplements that I'm using on him to extend his life. He was neglected for 11 years and if he only gets a few good months at the end then all of the attempts to keep him comfortable are worth the cost. Because he's 1/2 the size/weight of a human he's currently only taking one per day. If there are any left over when he eventually passes, they won't go to waste.
Update - It is now Apr 12th and I've had to make another purchase because he's still ALIVE! I had every intention of pushing him past the vet's dismal expiry date (which would have been Feb 6th) but to see him now, well past that, and doing beautifully! He runs/plays/eats so normally that it's very hard to tell that there's anything wrong with him.203 people found this helpful
